Wicklow Wedding in jeopardy after Priest takes offence to Cherry Blossoms

A wedding planner shared the tale this week on Joe Duffy’s show, Liveline.

A priest at a parish in Wicklow, demanded that all the decor in the church be removed before the wedding as “it was not a fashion show". The decor included Cherry Blossom trees, and battery operated Lanterns.

According to a member of the decor team, the priest began "pointing, shouting, screaming" at them to get rid of the items, and proclaimed he would refuse to perform the ceremony unless they were removed.

The bride contacted the show from her honeymoon to explain further:

"They had suggested a florist and I had declined the florist that they had because I had my own. The only thing we were told about the church was not to stick anything with Blu-Tac or thumbtacks to the pews, which didn't happen."

Involving suppliers and planners from the outset was the key to success she said.

And here’s how they did it: Invites were sent via email/Facebook. Flowers were freshly picked by family and friends. They focused on local businesses with locally sourced food, and got cakes from a bakery that didn’t use plastic packaging.

When it came to drinks, the no straw option was a no brainer. They also served beer and cider on tap.
